The Munich Film Society (Münchner Filmwerkstatt) is a non-profit association based in the Bavarian capital of Munich. Founded in 1995 to support, produce and exhibit independent, experimental, foreign and various other non-mainstream art films, the film society has grown from just film producing to fostering independent filmmaking in Munich and around and serves as a cornerstone in maintaining the local film industry.
We are group of young filmmakers who have known each other since film school or since working together on micro-budget projects. Several years ago we decided to pool our talents to support each other's projects and create synergies. As a non-profit association, the Munich Film Society clearly focuses on signature and artistic value. Among the recent productions of the Munich Film Society, there are such different movies as internationally distributed cult-horror-comedy The Golden Nazi Vampire of Absam: Part II - The Secret of Kottlitz Castle just as international arthouse hit The Red Spot. For the later, producer Martin Blankemeyer received a "Pierrot"-Award, Bavarian equivalent to the Oscars, as best young producer.
With a firm belief that international co-operation needs trusting and personal relations, we hope to continue building such strategic partnerships with international producers and filmmakers. Specifically, we are very open to concrete micro- to low-budget project proposals and prepared to enter co-productions at an advanced stage of development.
Today’s main activity of the film society are weekend training courses for film lovers and film professionels, held at the Bavaria Studios at Geiselgasteig (www.filmseminare.de). Internationally wellknown experts can be found among the teachers such as Christopher Vogler, Mark W. Travis, Keith Cunningham, Tom Schlesinger or Elliot Grove as well as local film industry heros such as Academy Award-Winner Tyron Montgomery, Martin Thau, Prof. Matthias Varga von Kibéd or Dr. Claudia Gladziejewski.
Since 2006, the film society also hosts the annual KALIBER35 Munich Int’l Short Film Festival at the Gloria Palast (www.kaliber35.de).
The Munich Film Society is a registered charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of German tax authority's regulations.
